Dear All
An URGENT request on behalf of the Australian Red Cross
Information has come to hand from the Australian Red Cross seeking assistance to advise potential blood donors that they are seeking donations of the rare U negative blood type. This is in response to a person potentially requiring a transfusion of this blood group for a planned caesarean section.
The U negative blood type is known to be present in some dark skinned people of African or African Caribbean descent, with approximately 1:400 individuals having this blood type.
People from the following countries or areas could be a possible source of U negative blood:
* USA (dark skinned Americans)
* Caribbean
* Western Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire)
* Southern Africa (South Africa (dark skinned South Africans only)
* Central Africa (Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo)
* Northern Africa (Morocco, Sudan, South Sudan, Tunisia, Algeria)
* Eastern Africa (Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia)
The PDF document (available from me, so email me for that) contains the information that you as a possible donor would need to take with you to the Red Cross so they are aware of the urgent request and the blood donation would be directed to the correct recipient.
Kind regards,
Chris Taylor
