Bingo! Thanks for pointing that out - FF fonts are now 100% better with all the fuzziness in the menu and the jaggies on the page gone. Just as well - I was about to reach the hair tearing out stage. I had the misfortune to install and remove K-desktop at the same time as Ubuntu auto-updated libcairo and the freetype stuff, so I was headed off down a complete blind alley.
ausprobiert hab ichs net, weil ich hab Dein problem nicht. ich kam nur per zufall in den thread, der allerdings, wie ich finde, voller guter hinweise ist, zb auch der hier, der auch bei mir fein hingehauen hat:
