Sorry if I'm interrupting in the wrong language
but if having to reply in German I'd have to use Google Translate, so I guess you prefer that I post in English!
Now to get to the point;
@ galloper: I have a 15" UXGA T42p (2373-Q1U) which I have been running Windows 7 Ultimate on for more than a year. I have upgraded the old, relatively slow HDD to a 128 GB Kingston SSDNow V+180 1.8" SATA SSD;
much more info about that in the sticky
GUIDE: Make your T4x *FAST* by replacing the HDD with a SSD! (you'll find my T42p-benchmarks with this SSD in
this (long!) post). With this setup, the T42p w/2 GB RAM, Win7 Ult. and the 128 GB Kingston 1.8" SATA SSD, I have had a completely stable system; no issues with stability at all. To those interested in extending the life of their e.g. T42p's with a minimum of effort, I can strongly suggest to upgrade to a SSD (but still I suggest to read the sticky mentioned above, to learn about other, more recent options).
One brand-new alternative and
huge upgrade (not the least in terms of massively increased performance!), although relatively costly, is to upgrade the T4x/p to have one of the new Chinese "T50-mothermoards"; see several very active threads at e.g. the
forum.thinkpads.com T4x sub-forum (also see the thread on this forum -->
T5xx T50 incoming! Chinese baut mainboards für T4x Gehäuse und 1st Gen. Core i Hardware), but that's beyond the scope of this post.
What stuck me in this thread is the above-cited comment by
Monsgrans, that the ("T42p") IBM a/b/g WLAN miniPCI (Atheros) interface does not "play" very will with Windows 7. I have recently experienced a very slow T42p-WLAN-connection-time-to-my-WLAN-router, using the Atheros a/b/g WLAN interface; it takes something like one minute for the T42p to logon to my home wireless network (under Win7 Ult.), while my T60, also running Win 7 Ult. and connecting to the same WLAN router, and also using an Atheros WLAN interface (the
39T5578), connects almost immediately when I boot the T60!?! So, something is spooky about the T42p (using the "ThinkPad 11a/b/g Mini PCI Adapter II, Atheros AR5004X chip” having IBM FRU 93P4262). In the T42p, I am using the
Vista WLAN-driver (which, by the way, first completely refused to install under Win7, saying that the OS was incorrect, but subsequently, when I messed a bit more with it, it finally installed, but gave "some errors" under this "forced" Win7 installation, but ended up working... expect, as mentioned, exhibiting the very slow connection/log-on to my WLAN router. Once connected, however, if works fine?!?).
Questions: Does anyone here know how to either...:
1) Solve the slow WLAN-connection/slow-log-on-to-my-WLAN-router with the T42p, while continue to use the Atheros WLAN interface (the 93P4262), or
2) How to solve the slow log-on/connection problem in this T42p (undetr Win7 Ult.) otherwise... e.g using an
Intel WLAN interface?? (
NB: On the
Drivers and software - ThinkPad T42, T42p when selecting "
Category = WLAN" and "
OS= Win 7", then Lenovo's driver-site unfortunately report: "
No results found for the selected Operating System" :facepalm: So, it seems to me that we're on own here... when trying to find a Windows7 driver for whatever T42/p-WLAN interface...?
Any hints about how to get an original T42p to work (incl. boot and connectto WLAN!) fast under Windows 7 will be
greatly appreciated!!
Thanks very much in advance...!
