One laptop feature that makes the R51 stand out from the pack is its 15-inch, backlit TFT display with 1,400 x 1,050-pixel resolution. A keyboard light enables users to continue to work under low-light conditions.
The R51 notebook also incorporates Big Blue's UltraNav multi-pointing system, which combines the functionality of a TrackPoint pointing device with an IBM-customized touch pad. The Think Express model also integrates a wireless CardBus adapter and antenna that is built right into the display cover for optimal signal reception. To give users maximum wireless LAN coverage, Big Blue's tri-mode Wi-Fi design fully supports the 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g standards.
On the wired side, the R51 notebook sports Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet, 56K modem, RJ-45 and RJ-11 ports. Select ThinkPad R51 models also arrive pre-tested to ensure that the notebooks will work with key features of infrastructure products from Cisco Systems.

I liked the enhanced sense of security that the ThinkPad R51 gives users by incorporating an enviable mix of rapid recovery, product safety and security features. But above all, I am impressed with the effort that Big Blue has made to give each buyer the ability to custom-tailor a laptop so that it can rise to the challenge of virtually every job contingency imaginable.
Weighing in at 6.6 pounds and measuring 10.6 x 13.1 x 1.5 inches, the Thinkpad R51 displays neither the slim and trim profile of an ultra-thin laptop nor the glitter of the svelte metallic packages of competing products. However, IBM has made up for the lack of product sex appeal by enabling customers to order the perfect configuration for rendering the work of road warriors just as productive as if they were sitting behind corporate desktops.
For my money, I would rather have all the tools at hand for dazzling prospective clients with my fancy footwork than have to make do with a more streamlined package that sacrifices performance for reductions in laptop size and weight. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give the ThinkPad R51 a 4.5 rating.
