Microsoft vermurkst UEFI-Unterstützung für Windows 7 auf ASUS Motherboards

Microsoft hatte eine Reihe von ASUS-Rechnern, auf welchen Windows 7 läuft, versehentlich durch ein optionales Software-Update, welches fälschlicherweise als "Empfohlen" eingestuft wurde, am letzten Patchtag unbrauchbar gemacht. Das Update KB3133977 verhindert auf ASUS-Rechnern im UEFI-Modus ein Start von Windows 7.

ASUS stellt unter diesem Link eine Lösung bereit, durch welche sich Windows 7 wieder starten lässt.

Microsoft inadvertently bricked a vast number of PCs running Windows 7, by changing the priority of an erroneous software update. Earlier this month, Microsoft changed the priority of an obscure-sounding security update for Windows 7 from "Optional" to "Recommended," (which by default gets automatically downloaded an installed). This update, KB3133977, bricks machines running ASUS motherboards, in the UEFI mode.

Windows 7 inherently does not support Secure Boot, a feature introduced with Windows 8, which takes advantage of UEFI to provide users with a layer of system integrity throughout the boot process. With KB3133977 installed on Windows 7 machines that use UEFI boot, the motherboard senses a Secure Boot violation, and invalidates the boot device (refuses to boot from it). ASUS recommended a BIOS setting with which you can deactivate Secure Boot while making your motherboard continuing to boot in UEFI mode.

Das Update ist nicht das Problem. Das Problem ist, dass ASUS seltsame Routinen im UEFI hat, die SecureBoot automatisch aktivieren. Und Windows 7 kann und konnte nie SecureBoot. Das genannte Microsoft Update korrigiert u.a. die Dateien des Bootloaders und daraufhin scheint das UEFI den Windows Bootloader nicht mehr als Windows 7 zu erkennen und aktiviert eben SecureBoot.

Oder kurz gesagt: "This problem occurs because ASUS allowed the main board to enable the Secure Boot process even though Windows 7 does not support this feature."

Also: ASUS hats verbockt. Ohne Wenn und Aber. Es scheint sich irgendwie niemand mehr die Mühe zu machen, zu recherchieren, wenn es um Windows geht. Auf jeglichen Seiten liest man nur mal wieder, dass Microsoft angeblich ein fehlerhaftes Update rausgebracht hätte. Was schlicht falsch ist. Aber hey, Microsoft ist doch immer noch böse, da kommts auf Fakten eh nicht an...
