Samsung 850 EVO SSD Coming Soon

Samsung and the world's second solid-state drive based on 3D vertical-NAND flash technology, the 850 EVO, was spotted on marketing material, ahead of its launch. Closely trailing the company's flagship 2.5-inch SATA 6 Gb/s drive, the 850 Pro, the 850 EVO will have lower price per GB. The drive will be based on Samsung's 3-bit (TLC) 3D V-NAND chips, and Samsung's updated triple-core processor. Given how Samsung is offering a stunning 10-year warranty with the 850 Pro, this drive could come with a similar warranty. The 850 Pro, for example, is rated with a TBW ceiling of 150 TB, double that of its predecessor.

Matrox Unveils Quad and Six-Head PCI Express Graphics Cards

Matrox Graphics Inc. today announced the first two cards in the eagerly anticipated Matrox C-Series - the Matrox C420 quad-output and the Matrox C680 six-output PCI Express graphics cards - engineered for stability, reliability and advanced multi-display capabilities. Both cards feature 2 GB of on-board memory and mini DisplayPort connectivity. They deliver outstanding performance for control room, digital signage, enterprise, industrial, security, A/V, and embedded system applications.

The low-profile Matrox C420 quad card features passive cooling for increased reliability and silent operation. Its low power consumption makes it a perfect fit for small-form-factor and embedded systems. The single-slot Matrox C680 supports up to six displays or projectors. Compatibility with the latest Ultra-HD and 4K panels makes C680 a versatile solution for multi-screen workstation setups. More displays can be supported by inserting two C680 cards into a system. The board-to-board framelock feature ensures synchronization of all displays to reduce tearing on digital signage and video walls.

VESA Releases DisplayPort 1.3 Standard, 4K at 120 Hz

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced the release of the DisplayPort 1.3 audio / video (A/V) standard. An update to the widely used DisplayPort 1.2a standard, this latest version increases the maximum link bandwidth to 32.4 Gbps, with each of four lanes running at a link rate of 8.1 Gbps/lane-a 50% increase from the previous version of the DisplayPort standard. Allowing for transport overhead, DisplayPort's 32.4 Gbps combined link rate delivers 25.92 Gbps of uncompressed video data.

The increased bandwidth enables higher resolution monitors, including recently announced 5K monitors (with pixel resolutions of 5120 x 2880) using a single DisplayPort cable without the use of compression. It will also enable higher resolutions when driving multiple monitors through a single connection using DisplayPort's Multi-Stream feature, such as the use of two 4K UHD monitors, each with a pixel resolution of 3840 x 2160, when using VESA Coordinated Video Timing.

Possible NVIDIA GM200 Specs Surface

Somebody sent our GPU-Z validation database a curious looking entry. Labeled "NVIDIA Quadro M6000" (not to be confused with AMD FirePro M6000), with a device ID of 10DE - 17F0, this card is running on existing Forceware 347.09 drivers, and features a BIOS string that's unlike anything we've seen. Could this be the fabled GM200/GM210 silicon?

The specs certainly look plausible - 3,072 CUDA cores, 50 percent more than those on the GM204; a staggering 96 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 12 GB of memory. The memory is clocked at 6.60 GHz (GDDR5-effective), belting out 317 GB/s of bandwidth. The usable bandwidth is higher than that, due to NVIDIA's new lossless texture compression algorithms. The core is running at gigahertz-scraping 988 MHz. The process node and die-size are values we manually program GPU-Z to show, since they're not things the drivers report (to GPU-Z). NVIDIA is planning to hold a presser on the 8th of January, along the sidelines of the 2015 International CES. We're expecting a big announcement (pun intended).

JEDEC Announces Publication of e.MMC Standard Update v5.1

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in standards development for the microelectronics industry, today announced the publication of JESD84-B51: Embedded MultiMediaCard (e.MMC), Electrical Standard (5.1). e.MMC v5.1 defines new features and updates for this embedded mass-storage flash memory that is widely used in smartphones and other mobile devices. Intended to facilitate an enhanced end user experience, the new version of e.MMC offers command queueing for the first time, and also defines important security updates. JESD84-B51 is available for free download from the JEDEC website.

The new revision of the standard defines e.MMC Command Queueing, which supports the optimized execution of commands within the device, versus the single thread protocol defined in prior versions of the standard. Command Queueing will enable the device to analyze commands before executing them, thereby maximizing effectiveness of the e.MMC memory storage. This will result in a positive effect on random read performance and read latency, thereby improving the end user experience.

Secure Write Protection & Enhanced Strobe Mode
In response to requests from industry users for enhanced security, e.MMC Secure Write Protection defines a new security protocol that ensures only a trusted entity will be capable of protecting or unprotecting the device. Enhanced Strobe Mode for HS400 improves upon the HS400 mode interface speed increase that was first defined in e.MMC version 5.0, by facilitating faster synchronization between the host and the device. As a result, designers and engineers will be able to simplify the design and integration phases and, moreover, initialize systems more rapidly and with greater ease. Devices employing this aspect of e.MMC version 5.1 will improve storage access latencies, meaning faster access to data for end users.

"Consumer expectations for the performance and reliability of mobile devices continue to rise," said Mian Quddus, Chairman of the JEDEC Board of Directors. "JEDEC is committed to supporting the industry's efforts to meet and exceed those expectations, as evidenced by its continued work on the e.MMC standard: a low-cost, high-performance memory solution."

Other features added to e.MMC in version 5.1 include:
  • Extension to 8KB of RPMB (Replay Protected Memory Block) access data length for throughput improvements
  • Cache Enhancement Barrier
  • Cache Flushing Report
  • Background Operation Control
  • Editorial clarifications

NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN-X Pictured Up-close

Here are some of the first close-up shots of NVIDIA's new flagship graphics card, the GeForce GTX TITAN-X, outside Jen-Hsun Huang's Rafiki moment at a GDC presentation. If we were to throw in an educated guess, NVIDIA probably coined the name "TITAN-X" as it sounds like "Titan Next," much like it chose "TITAN-Z" as it sounds like "Titans" (plural, since it's a dual-GPU card). Laid flat out on a table, the card features an a matte-black colored reference cooling solution that looks identical to the one on the original TITAN. Other cosmetic changes include a green glow inside the fan intake, the TITAN logo, and of course, the green glow on the GeForce GTX marking on the top.

The card lacks a back-plate, giving us a peek at its memory chips. The card features 12 GB of GDDR5 memory, and looking at the twelve memory chips on the back of the PCB, with no other traces, we reckon the chip features a 384-bit wide memory interface. The 12 GB is achieved using twenty-four 4 Gb chips. The card draws power from a combination of 8-pin and 6-pin power connectors. The display I/O is identical to that of the GTX 980, with three DisplayPorts, one HDMI, and one DVI. Built on the 28 nm GM200 silicon, the GTX TITAN-X is rumored to feature 3,072 CUDA cores. NVIDIA CEO claimed that the card will be faster than even the previous generation dual-GPU flagship product by NVIDIA, the GeForce GTX TITAN-Z.

Ja, denke ich schon. Ist ja der pure Wahnsinn. 12GB GDDR5-RAM !
